NewsGuard Launches War on Alternative Media

NewsGuard Launches War on Alternative Media

Jan 11, 2019 by

By Whitney Webb –

(MPN) — Soon after the social media “purge” of independent media sites and pages this past October, a top neoconservative insider — Jamie Fly — was caught stating that the mass deletion of anti-establishment and anti-war pages on Facebook and Twitter was “just the beginning” of a concerted effort by the U.S. government and powerful corporations to silence online dissent within the United States and beyond.

While a few, relatively uneventful months in the online news sphere have come and gone since Fly made this ominous warning, it appears that the neoconservatives and other standard bearers of the military-industrial complex and the U.S. oligarchy are now poised to let loose their latest digital offensive against independent media outlets that seek to expose wrongdoing in both the private and public sectors.

As MintPress News Editor-in-Chief Mnar Muhawesh recently wroteMintPress was informed that it was under review by an organization called NewsGuard Technologies, which described itself to MintPress as simply a “news rating agency” and asked Muhawesh to comment on a series of allegations, several of which were blatantly untrue. However, further examination of this organization reveals that it is funded by and deeply connected to the U.S. government, neo-conservatives, and powerful monied interests, all of whom have been working overtime since the 2016 election to silence dissent to American forever-wars and corporate-led oligarchy.

More troubling still, NewsGuard — by virtue of its deep connections to government and Silicon Valley — is lobbying to have its rankings of news sites installed by default on computers in U.S. public libraries, schools, and universities as well as on all smartphones and computers sold in the United States.

In other words, as NewsGuard ’s project advances, it will soon become almost impossible to avoid this neocon-approved news site’s ranking systems on any technological device sold in the United States. Worse still, if its efforts to quash dissenting voices in the U.S. are successful, NewsGuard promises that its next move will be to take its system global.

Red light, green light . . .

NewsGuard has received considerable attention in the mainstream media of late, having been the subject of a slew of articles in the Washington Post, the Hillthe Boston Globe, Politico, Bloomberg, Wired, and many others just over the past few months. Those articles portray NewsGuard as using “old-school journalism” to fight “fake news” through its reliance on nine criteria allegedly intended to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to online news.

NewsGuard separates sites it deems worthy and sites it considers unreliable by using a color-coded rating — green, yellow, or red — and more detailed “nutrition labels” regarding a site’s credibility or lack thereof. Rankings are created by NewsGuard’s team of “trained analysts.” The color-coding system may remind some readers of the color-coded terror threat-level warning system that was created after 9/11, making it worth noting that Tom Ridge, the former secretary of Homeland Security who oversaw the implementation of that system under George W. Bush, is on NewsGuard’s advisory board.

As NewsGuard releases a new rating of a site, that rating automatically spreads to all computers that have installed its news ranking browser plug-in. That plug-in is currently available for free for the most commonly used internet browsers. NewsGuard directly markets the browser plug-in to libraries, schools and internet users in general.

According to its website, NewsGuard has rated more than 2,000 news and information sites. However, it plans to take its ranking efforts much farther by eventually reviewing “the 7,500 most-read news and information websites in the U.S.—about 98 percent of news and information people read and share online” in the United States in English.

recent Gallup study, which was supported and funded by NewsGuard as well as the Knight Foundation (itself a major investor in NewsGuard ), stated that a green rating increased users likelihood to share and read content while a red rating decreased that likelihood. Specifically, it found 63 percent would be less likely to share news stories from red-rated websites, and 56 percent would be more likely to share news from green-rated websites, though the fact that NewsGuard and one of its top investors funded the poll makes it necessary to take these findings with a grain of salt.

However, some of the rankings NewsGuard itself has publicized show that it is manifestly uninterested in fighting “misinformation.” How else to explain the fact that the Washington Post and CNN both received high scores even though both have written stories or made statements that later proved to be entirely false? For example, CNN falsely claimed in 2016 that it was illegal for Americans to read WikiLeaks releases and illegally colluded with the DNC to craft presidential debate questions.

In addition, in 2017, CNN published a fake story that a Russian bank linked to a close ally of President Donald Trump was under Senate investigation. That same year, CNN was forced to retract a report that the Trump campaign had been tipped off early about WikiLeaks documents damaging to Hillary Clinton when it later learned the alert was about material already publicly available.

The Washington Post, whose $600 million conflict of interest with the CIA goes unnoted by NewsGuard , has also published false stories since the 2016 election, including one article that falsely claimed that “Russian hackers” had tapped into Vermont’s electrical grid. It was later found that the grid itself was never breached and the “hack” was only an isolated laptop with a minor malware problem. Yet, such acts of journalistic malpractice are apparently of little concern to Newsguard when those committing such acts are big-name corporate media outlets.

Furthermore, NewsGuard gives a high rating to Voice of America, the U.S. state-funded media outlet, even though its former acting associate director said that the outlet produces “fluff journalism” and despite the fact that it was recently reformed to “provide news that supports our [U.S.] national security objectives.” However, RT receives a low “red” rating for being funded by the Russian government and for “raising doubts about other countries and their institutions” (i.e., including reporting critical of the institutions and governments of the U.S. and its allies).

Keeping the conversation safe for the corporatocracy

NewsGuard describes itself as an organization dedicated to “restoring trust and accountability” and using “journalism to fight false news, misinformation and disinformation.” While it repeatedly claims on its website that its employees “have no political axes to grind” and “care deeply about reliable journalism’s pivotal role in democracy,” a quick look at its co-founders, top funders and advisory board make it clear that NewsGuard is aimed at curbing voices that hold the powerful — in both government and the private sector — to account.

NewsGuard is the latest venture to result from the partnership between Steven Brill and Louis Gordon Crovitz, who currently serve as co-CEOs of the group. Brill is a long-time journalist —  published in TIME and The New Yorker, among others — who most recently founded the Yale Journalism Initiative, which aims to encourage Yale students who “aspire to contribute to democracy in the United States and around the world” to become journalists at top U.S. and international media organizations. He first teamed up with Crovitz in 2009 to create Journalism Online, which sought to make the online presence of top American newspapers and other publishers profitable, and was also the CEO of the company that partnered up with the TSA to offer “registered” travelers the ability to move more quickly through airport security — for a price, of course.

While Brill’s past does not in itself raise red flags, Crovitz — his partner in founding Journalism Online, then Press+, and now NewsGuard — is the last person one would expect to find promoting any legitimate effort to “restore trust and accountability” in journalism. In the early 1980s. Crovitz held a number of positions at Dow Jones and at the Wall Street Journal, eventually becoming executive vice president of the former and the publisher of the latter before both were sold to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in 2007. He is also a board member of Business Insider, which has received over $30 million from Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos in recent years.

In addition to being a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Crovitz proudly notes in his bio, available on NewsGuard’s website, that he has been an “editor or contributor to books published by the American Enterprise Institute and Heritage Foundation.” Though many MintPress readers are likely familiar with these two institutions, for those who are not, it is worth pointing out that the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is one of the most influential neoconservative think tanks in the country and its “scholars,” directors and fellows have included neoconservative figures like Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, John Bolton and Frederick Kagan.

During the George W. Bush administration, AEI was instrumental in promoting the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq and has since advocated for militaristic solutions to U.S. foreign policy objectives and the expansion of the U.S.’ military empire as well as the “War on Terror.” During the Bush years, AEI was also closely associated with the now defunct and controversial neoconservative organization known as the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), which presciently called, four years before 9/11, for a “new Pearl Harbor” as needed to rally support behind American military adventurism.

The Heritage Foundation, like AEI, was also supportive of the war in Iraq and has pushed for the expansion of the War on Terror and U.S. missile defense and military empire. Its corporate donors over the years have included Procter & Gamble, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow Chemical, and Exxon Mobil, among others.

Crovitz’s associations with AEI and the Heritage Foundation, as well as his ties to Wall Street and the upper echelons of corporate media, are enough to make any thinking person question his commitment to being a fair watchdog of “legitimate journalism.” Yet, beyond his innumerable connections to neoconservatives and powerful monied interest, Crovitz has repeatedly been accused of inserting misinformation into his Wall Street Journal columns, with groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation accusing him of “repeatedly getting his facts wrong” on NSA surveillance and other issues. Some of the blatant falsehoods that have appeared in Crovitz’s work have never been corrected, even when his own sources called him out for misinformation.

For example, in a WSJ opinion piece that was written by Crovitz in 2012, Crovitz was accused of making “fantastically false claims” about the history of the internet by the very people he had cited to support those claims.

As TechDirt wrote at the time:

Almost everyone he [Crovitz] sourced or credited to support his argument that the internet was invented entirely privately at Xerox PARC and when Vint Cerf helped create TCP/IP, has spoken out to say he’s wrong. And that list includes both Vint Cerf, himself, and Xerox. Other sources, including Robert Taylor (who was there when the internet was invented) and Michael Hiltzik, have rejected Crovitz’s spinning of their own stories.”

The oligarch team’s deep bench

While Brill and Crovitz’s connections alone should be enough cause for alarm, a cursory examination of NewsGuard’s advisory board makes it clear that NewsGuard was created to serve the interests of American oligarchy. Chief among NewsGuard’s advisors are Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of Homeland Security under George W. Bush and Ret. General Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, a former NSA director and principal at the Chertoff Group, a security consultancy seeking to “advise corporate clients and governments, including foreign governments” on security matters that was co-founded by former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who also currently serves as the board chairman of major weapons manufacturer BAE systems.

Another NewsGuard advisor of note is Richard Stengel, former editor of Time magazine, a “distinguished fellow” at the Atlantic Council and Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy under President Barack Obama. At a panel discussion hosted last May by the Council on Foreign Relations, Stengel described his past position at the State Department as “chief propagandist” and also stated that he is “not against propaganda. Every country does it and they have to do it to their own population and I don’t necessarily think it’s that awful.”

Other NewsGuard advisors include Don Baer, former White House communications director and advisor to Bill Clinton and current chairman of both PBS and the influential PR firm Burson Cohn & Wolfe as well as Elise Jordan, former communications director for the National Security Council and former speech-writer for Condoleezza Rice, as well as the widow of slain journalist Michael Hastings — who was writing an exposé on former CIA director John Brennan at the time of his suspicious death.

A look at NewsGuard’s investors further illustrates the multifarious connections between this organization and the American political and corporate elite. While Brill and Crovitz themselves are the company’s top investors, one of NewsGuard’s most important investors is the Publicis Groupe. Publicis is the third largest global communications company in the world, with more than 80,000 employees in over 100 countries and an annual revenue of over €9.6 billion ($10.98 billion) in 2017. It is no stranger to controversy, as one of its subsidiaries, Qorvis, recently came under fire for exploiting U.S. veterans at the behest of the Saudi government and also helped the Saudi government to “whitewash” its human rights record and its genocidal war in Yemen after receiving $6 million from the Gulf Kingdom in 2017.

Furthermore, given its size and influence, it is unsurprising that the Publicis Groupe counts many powerful corporations and governments among its clientele. Some of its top clients in 2018 included pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer and Bayer/Monsanto as well as Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, McDonald’s, Kraft Heinz, Burger King, and the governments of Australia and Saudi Arabia. Given its influential role in funding NewsGuard, it is reasonable to point out the potential conflict of interest posed by the fact that sites that accurately report on Publicis’ powerful clients — but generate bad publicity — could be targeted for such reports in NewsGuard’s ranking.

In addition to the Publicis Groupe, another major investor in NewsGuard is the Blue Haven Initiative, which is the venture capital “impact investment” fund of the wealthy Pritzker family — one of the top 10 wealthiest families in the U.S., best known as the owners of the Hyatt Hotel chain and for being the second largest financial contributors to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Other top investors include John McCarter, a long-time executive at U.S. government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, as well as Thomas Glocer, former CEO of Reuters and a member of the boards of pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co., financial behemoth Morgan Stanley, and the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as a member of the Atlantic Council’s International Advisory Board.

Through these investors, NewsGuard managed to raise $6 million to begin its ranking efforts in March of 2018. NewsGuard’s actual revenues and financing, however, have not been disclosed despite the fact that it requires the sites it ranks to disclose their funding. In a display of pure hypocrisy, NewsGuard’s United States Securities and Exchange Commission Form D — which was filed March 5, 2018 — states that the company “declined to disclose” the size of its total revenue.

Why give folks a choice?

While even a quick glance at its advisory board alone would be enough for many Americans to decline to install NewsGuard’s browser extension on their devices, the danger of NewsGuard is the fact that it is diligently working to make the adoption of its app involuntary. Indeed, if voluntary adoption of NewsGuard’s app were the case, there would likely be little cause for concern, given that its website attracts barely more than 300 visits per month and its social-media following is relatively small, with just over 2,000 Twitter followers and barely 500 Facebook likes at the time of this article’s publication.

To illustrate its slip-it-under-the-radar strategy, NewsGuard has gone directly to state governments to push its browser extension onto entire state public library systems, even though its website suggests that individual public libraries are welcome to install the extension if they so choose. The first state to install NewsGuard on all of its public library computers across its 51 branches was the state of Hawaii — which was the first to partner with NewsGuard’s “news literacy initiative,” just last month.

According to local media, NewsGuard “now works with library systems representing public libraries across the country, and is also partnering with middle schools, high schools, universities, and educational organizations to support their news literacy efforts,” suggesting that these NewsGuard services targeting libraries and schools are soon to become a compulsory component of the American library and education system, despite NewsGuard’s glaring conflicts of interest with massive multinational corporations and powerful government power-brokers.

Notably, NewsGuard has a powerful partner that has allowed it to start finding its way into public library and school computers throughout the country. As part of its new “Defending Democracy” initiative, Microsoft announced last August that it would be partnering with NewsGuard to actively market the company’s ranking app and other services to libraries and schools throughout the country. Microsoft’s press release regarding the partnership states that Newsguard “will empower voters by providing them with high-quality information about the integrity and transparency of online news sites.”

Since then, Microsoft has now added the NewsGuard app as a built-in feature of Microsoft Edge, its browser for iOS and Android mobile devices, and is unlikely to stop there. Indeed, as a recent report in favor of Microsoft’s partnership with Newsguard noted, “we could hope that this new partnership will allow Microsoft to add NewsGuard to Edge on Windows 10 [operating system for computers] as well.”

NewsGuard , for its part, seems confident that its app will soon be added by default to all mobile devices. On its website, the organization notes that “NewsGuard will be available on mobile devices when the digital platforms such as social media sites and search engines or mobile operating systems add our ratings and Nutrition Labels directly.” This shows that Newsguard isn’t expecting its rating systems to be offered as a downloadable application for mobile devices but something that social media sites like Facebook, search engines like Google, and mobile device operating systems that are dominated by Apple and Google will “directly” integrate into nearly every smartphone and tablet sold in the United States.

Boston Globe article on NewsGuard from this past October makes this plan even more clear. The Globe wrote at the time:

Microsoft has already agreed to make NewsGuard a built-in feature in future products, and [Newsguard co-CEO] Brill said he’s in talks with other online titans. The goal is to have NewsGuard running by default on our computers and phones whenever we scan the Web for news.”

This eventuality is made all the more likely given the fact that, in addition to Microsoft, NewsGuard is also closely connected to Google, as Google has been a partner of the Publicis Groupe since 2014, when the two massive companies joined Condé Nast to create a new marketing service called La Maison that is “focused on producing engaging content for marketers in the luxury space.” Given Google’s power in the digital sphere as the dominant search engine, the creator of the Android mobile operating system, and the owner of YouTube, its partnership with Publicis means that NewsGuard ’s rating system will soon see itself being promoted by yet another of Silicon Valley’s most powerful companies.

Furthermore, there is an effort underway to integrate NewsGuard into social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, as NewsGuard was launched, co-CEO Brill stated that he planned to sell the company’s ratings of news sites to Facebook and Twitter. Last March, Brill told CNN that “We’re asking them [Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google] to pay a fraction of what they pay their P.R. people and their lobbyists to talk about the problem.”

On Wednesday, Gallup released a poll that will likely be used as a major selling point to social media giants. The poll — funded by NewsGuard and the Knight Foundation, which is a top investor in NewsGuard and has recently funded a series of Gallup polls relating to online news — seems to have been created with the intention of manufacturing consent for the integration of NewsGuard with top social media sites.

This is because the promoted findings from the study are as follows:“89% of users of social media sites and 83% overall want social media sites and search engines to integrate NewsGuard ratings and reviews into their news feeds and search results” and “69% would trust social media and search companies more if they took the simple step of including NewsGuard in their products.” However, a disclaimer at the end of the poll states that the results, which were based on the responses of 706 people each of whom received $2 to participate, “may not be reflective of attitudes of the broader U.S adult population.”

With trust at Facebook nose-diving and Facebook’s censorship of independent media already well underway, the findings of this poll could well be used to justify its integration into Facebook’s platform. The connections of both NewsGuard and Facebook to the Atlantic Council make this seem a given.

Financial censorship

Another NewsGuard service shows that this organization is also seeking to harm independent media financially by targeting online revenue. Through a service called “BrandGuard,” which it describes as a “brand safety tool aimed at helping advertisers keep their brands off of unreliable news and information sites while giving them the assurance they need to support thousands of Green-rated [i.e., NewsGuard-approved] news and information sites, big and small.”

At the time the service was announced last November, NewsGuard co-CEO Brill stated that the company was “in discussions with the ad tech firms, leading agencies, and major advertisers” eager to adopt a blacklist of news sites deemed “unreliable” by NewsGuard. This is unsurprising given the leading role of the Publicis Groupe, one of the world’s largest advertising and PR firms, has in funding NewsGuard. As a consequence, it seems likely that many, if not all, of Publicis’ client companies will choose to adopt this blacklist to help crush many of the news sites that are unafraid to hold them accountable.

It is also important to note here that Google’s connection to Publicis and thus NewsGuard could spell trouble for independent news pages that rely on Google AdSense for some or all of their ad-based revenue. Google AdSense has long been targeting sites like MintPress by demonetizing articles for information or photographs it deemed controversial, including demonetizing one article for including a photo showing U.S. soldiers involved in torturing Iraqi detainees at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

Since then, Google — a U.S. military contractor — has repeatedly tried to shutter ad access to MintPress articles that involve reporting that is critical of U.S. empire and military expansion. One article that has been repeatedly flagged by Google details how many African-Americans have questioned whether the Women’s March has aided or harmed the advancement of African-Americans in the United States. Google has repeatedly claimed that the article, which was written by African-American author and former Washington Post bureau chief Jon Jeter, contains “dangerous content.”

Given Google’s already established practice of targeting factual reporting it deemed controversial through AdSense, Brandguard will likely offer the tech giant just the excuse it needs to cut off sites like MintPress, and other pages equally critical of empire, altogether.

An action plan for the genuine protection of journalism

Though it is just getting started, NewsGuard’s plan to insert its app into every device and major social-media network is a threat to any news site that regularly publishes information that rubs any of NewsGuard’s investors, partners or advisors the wrong way. Given its plan to rank the English-language U.S. news sites that account for 98 percent of U.S. digital news consumption, NewsGuard’s agenda is of the utmost concern to every independent media page active in the United States and beyond — given NewsGuard’s promise to take its project global.

By linking up with former CIA and NSA directors, Silicon Valley Giants, and massive PR firms working for some of the most controversial governments and corporations in the world, NewsGuard has betrayed the fact that it is not actually seeking to “restore trust and accountability” in journalism, but to “restore trust and accountability” in news outlets that protect the existing power structure and help shield the corporate-led oligarchy and military-industrial complex from criticism.

Not only is it trying to tank the reputations of independent media through its biased ranking system, Newsguard is also seeking to attack these alternative voices financially and by slipping its ranking system by default onto all computers and phones sold in the U.S.

However, NewsGuard and it agenda of guarding the establishment from criticism can be stopped. By supporting independent media and unplugging from social media sites committed to censorship, like Facebook and Twitter, we can strengthen the independent media community and keep it afloat despite the unprecedented nature of these attacks on free speech and watchdog journalism.

Beyond that, a key way to keep NewsGuard and those behind it on their toes is to hold them to account by pointing out their clear conflicts of interest and hypocrisy and by derailing the narrative they are carefully crafting that NewsGuard is “non-partisan,” “trustworthy,” and true guardians against the scourge of “fake news.”

While this report has sought to be a starting point for such work, anyone concerned about NewsGuard and its connections to the war machine and corrupt corporations should feel encouraged to point out the organization’s own conflicts of interests and shady connections via its Twitter and Facebook pages and the feedback section on NewsGuard’s website. The best way to defeat this new tool of the neocons is to put them on notice and to continue to expose NewsGuard as a guardian of empire, not a guardian of journalism.

“America is Not Lost If We Do Our Part”

By Donna Garner

6.4.19

THE OBAMA CURSE

We cannot be silent and afraid to take on the lies of the LGBTQ agenda. We are still living under Obama’s curse. It was Obama and his administration who exponentially thrust the LGBTQ agenda upon America when in 2009 U. S. Sect. of Education Arne Duncan brought in Kevin Jennings to be the Assistant Deputy Secretary in the Office of Safe Schools.

Kevin Jennings was the homosexual founder of GLSEN which promotes homosexual clubs in high schools, middle schools, and grade schools. He was the driving force behind establishing and promoting the “Day of Silence” which was used to pressure students into not only tolerating LGBTQ but into promoting and then advocating for it.

In 2010, Obama arbitrarily changed Title IX to include “gender identity”; and he placed every school in America – K – 16, public and private — under the threat of the Civil Rights Commission if his “Dear Colleague” letters were not followed. This forced the LGBTQ agenda into all schools in our nation (private and public) all the way from kindergarten through colleges/universities.

Because so many Americans were silent and did not want to get involved in the subject of LGBTQ and Obama’s social justice agenda, the entire set of lies came pouring into the minds and souls of our nation’s students.

COMMON CORE’S HUGE SUCCESS AS AN INDOCTRINATION TOOL

Even though we now have solid evidence to prove that Common Core has lowered students’ academic achievement throughout our country, in the eyes of Obama and his administration, Common Core is a huge success.  The LGBTQ movement is well on its way to take over our nation.

Gender identity and gender preference are now common bywords.  Little children are taking hormone blockers that will leave them incapable of ever having their own children.  Body parts are being cut off as deceived young people are “transitioning” into a life of misery and chaos – never to be able to go back and become normal males nor females again.

Sexually transmitted diseases are running rampant among the LGBTQ community, and perverse sexual activities are leaving people without the ability to have normal bodily functions.

Medical doctors are finding objects buried in people’s body cavities (e.g., sex toys), and all sorts of abnormal conditions are being documented in people’s sexual organs; but, unfortunately, many in the medical community are afraid to speak out for fear of losing their medical practice by publicly being labeled “homophobic” by the LGBTQ community.

THE TRUE PURPOSE OF COMMON CORE REVEALED

The purpose of Common Core was never to raise students’ academic achievement; the purpose was to steal their minds and souls and to indoctrinate them into the social justice agenda.  Since almost the first day that Obama was on the job, he and his administration began the step-by-step, careful implementation of their Common Core plan and their community organizing strategies based largely on Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals.

Instead of students having time to gain foundational knowledge and skills that have equipped previous generations of Americans to become the greatest entrepreneurs on earth, Common Core-educated students have spent their time developing their skills in learning how to ridicule authority figures, call out, plan Twitter storms, create mobs and protest rallies, elevate their voices to an emotion-filled pitch, record podcasts with every disgusting epithet and disrespectful verbiage they can use, and invade violently the privacy of conservative elected officials.

The LGBTQ message is infused right into the midst of victimization, racial inequality, sexual discrimination, #Me Too, #Black Lives Matter, open borders, Communism, socialism, reparations, distribution of wealth, climate change hysteria, hatred for straight White males, anti-Christian/anti-Semitism, etc. – all one blended message.

COMMON CORE PERMEATION

Our nation has now spent nine years of being indoctrinated into the Common Core agenda 24/7, and its destructive philosophy has permeated almost every classroom in America – public, charter, and even private and home schools.

When David Coleman, the architect of the Common Core, became the CEO of The College Board that produces the Pre-SAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement, he almost immediately began to align all CB products with the Common Core.  Because teachers are basically forced into teaching whatever is being tested, the Common Core and its “infected” products and tests have taken over our nation’s day-to-day classroom curriculum.

The students who were in elementary school in 2009 are now in high school; and their lack of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies knowledge and skills is pervasive.  Students who were in junior high in 2009 are currently populating our colleges and universities; and tenured professors are amazed at their students’ lack of basic knowledge and their twisted reasoning skills.  We who were educated through fact-based, traditional academics are astounded by young people such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who reveal their ignorance every single day; but they are the products of exactly what Obama and his ilk meant to produce.

The general public was fooled into thinking Common Core was about academics; it never was. The purpose of Common Core was to force teachers into teaching the social justice agenda and to destroy traditional thinking among this and succeeding generations of students.

Common Core’s purpose was to crush American exceptionalism; to promote victimization, White privilege, and Black bondage; to cast aspersions on great American heroes and heroines; to lead students to doubt the validity of the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution; to become fixated on global warming/climate change and its fear-based, end-of-the-world scenario built upon unscientific lies; to cast aside the time-honored classics with their emphasis on good and evil/right and wrong; and to tear down students’ reading abilities so that they would be easily lured into believing false political agendas.

THE FALL OF CORPORATE AMERICA

Corporate America tied to the U. S. Chambers of Commerce (which was a big backer of Obama’s Common Core) are furthering the far-leftist, social justice agenda with their latest LGBTQ products (6.3.19 — “Corporate America Joins LGBT Indoctrination Bandwagon” — by PNW Staff  — http://www.prophecynewswatch.com/article.cfm?recent_news_id=3240).

Even though Obama and his failed Presidency are long gone, his curse still remains upon our land through his Common Core indoctrination and its social justice/ LGBTQ agenda. There was a time when we could have gotten the attention of Corporate America by boycotting their outrageous, LGBTQ products; but their agenda has now become widespread with Nabisco, Gillette, Converse, Ikea, Adidas, Reebok, Ugg, Nike, Listerine, Disney, Starbucks, Target, Hollister, Walt Disney, JP Morgan Chase and Co., HBO, Delta Airlines, NBA, McDonald’s, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, Gucci, Bloomberg, Colgate-Palmolive, and many others perpetuating the fallacious LGBTQ agenda.

THERE IS HOPE IF WE WILL DO OUR PART

  • To draw our country back from the slippery slope of sheer destruction, I believe our best efforts have to be multi-faceted.
  • First, we have to teach those around us in our sphere of influence the basic truths found in traditional, fact-based sources; and we have to teach people how to recognize and verify information to make sure it is credible and not fake.
  • Our lives and personal testimonies are very compelling to those with whom we have developed close relationships, and we need to use every opportunity to share with them the important lessons in life that we have learned.
  • We should use every possible avenue of communication to help voters to become educated and to see through the political lies based upon hyperbole, emotions, opinions, and feelings:  5.17.19 — “To Remember on 2020 Election Day – Those Who Supported the Pro-LGBTQ Equality Act” — By Donna Garner – EdViews.org/to-remember-on-2020-election-day-those-who-supported-the-pro-lgbtq-equality-act/
  • As responsible citizens, we need to quit repeating the disrespectful lies taken from the leftwing news media about our President and instead focus our conversations on the “Quiet Coup” that began in the Obama administration to steal the Presidency.  As the truth comes out about those who were behind that coup, we must tell our friends and neighbors to make sure they grasp the full significance of what could have happened to the United States if God had not intervened.
  • Most importantly, we need to spend time in prayer, thanking God for His great mercy upon us, asking Him to continue to teach us Truth, lifting to Him those who need His special protection in the military and as first-responders, and praying for all of those who have authority over us — including President Trump and those who serve with him.

Why You Should Consider Studying Life Science Like Cody Moxam

Life science is an incredible, expansive, multi-disciplinary, and necessary field of study that plays a significant role in making the world a better place and challenges the people that partake in it. True, it can be demanding, but life science students like Cody Moxam at the University of Dallas know how necessary the field is to human, plant, and animal life. If you are looking to study something stimulating and worthwhile, here are a few reasons why you should consider life science:

It’s everywhere

Evidence of life science is not something you are hard-pressed to find outside the classroom. According to The Complete University Guide:

“This stuff is everywhere; it’s whizzing away when you eat your lunch, when you’re throwing coffee down your gullet to prep for a 9 am lecture, when you walk your dog, when you’re browsing the internet for guidance about what degree to take. Study Biological Sciences and it’s impossible not to come face-to-face with whatever it is you’re learning about. It forces you to get under the skin of everything you see, to think about the mechanics whirring around under the hood of the world.”

Of course, Biological Sciences is a specific and wide-ranging major, but other life science degrees such as biochemistry, genetics, and zoology still allow you to dig deep into the driving forces of life on this planet. When you study life science, you’ll see what you learn about in the classroom everywhere you go—and you may even be able to appreciate the world’s wonder more so than before.

There are numerous job opportunities

Careers in life science are abundant. With new research helping to explain different biological processes that were once mysteries (and a growing population, as well as many individuals who are aging), it’s important to have people who can take this information and apply it to curing diseases and protecting the environment.

Life science is a field that integrates with an assortment of others, so you can combine it with other subjects during your time in school. Do you also have an interest in designing machines and working with parts? Bioengineers and biotechnologists develop devices like pacemakers, prosthetic limbs, and other systems that improve people’s quality of life. Computational biology—which involves applying data-analytical and theoretical methods, computational simulation, mathematical modeling—intersects life science with fields such as animation, statistics, genomics, ecology, neuroscience, and more.

You’ll gain practical experience

Life science is often a hands-on field of study, so you’ll gain practical experience in school before you graduate and seek employers. Many universities conduct original research, so even if you don’t have your degree yet, you will still see valuable lab time and have opportunities to explore your own questions.

When you study life science, you’ll learn far more than hard facts and skills: you will also gain experience working with teams, so you’ll learn the importance of communication, time management, and delegation—which are skills many adults in the professional world are still mastering. Senior chemistry lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire, Dr. Barry Haggett, says of his school’s programs:

“[they] will equip you with both specialist knowledge and specialist skills—as well as the transferable skills that are necessary wherever your subsequent career may take you. Life Sciences graduates with critical analytical skills and the ability to present complex information in a clear manner are widely sought after—taking you wherever you want to go.”

You can be a part of something big

Life scientists are at the forefront of revolutionary developments in medicine, genetics, technology, and agriculture. Some of them have, for instance, created transgenic crops that resist parasitic infections and produce higher yields. This increase in food production can feed numerous people around the world, such as those affected by famine.

Global warming is a dire issue that impacts the entire planet. While it may seem as if engineers are better suited for developing environmentally friendly technology and fuel, life scientists are working to create plant-based alternative fuel sources that reduce pollution.

On the medical side, geneticists are studying genetic codes to identify possible predispositions to cancer so that people with such risks can take preventative measures before fully-fledged cancer develops. They are also finding cures to infections and diseases, helping grow organs to reduce the need for transplants, developing less invasive methods for surgeries, and more.

Are you deciding what to earn your degree in? If you want to be part of something revolutionary that makes life better for the inhabitants of this planet, studying life science might be for you.

frederick-oberlander-a-new-york-attorney-not-to-be-trusted

Frederick Oberlander, A New York Attorney, Not to Be Trusted

Dec 27, 2018 by

On the behalf of a former employee, Frederick Oberlander, a New York attorney, claimed in 2010 that an international real estate investment company committed fraud. Oberlander also claimed that the firm hid criminal activities by Felix Sater, who is one of the firm’s partners and is Russian born. The company in question has also developed projects for Donald Trump, one of which was the Trump SoHo hotel. However, it has since been revealed that Oberlander is not a person to be trusted.

Court records show that while litigating the case, Oberlander committed various ethical violations. Using private data from Sater’s criminal files is the most atrocious violations committed by Oberlander. The files had been sealed by a federal judge because Sater was cooperating with the U.S. government. The release of sealed documents is a direct violation of the court order. Due to this action, there was a court injunction, which forbad any further disclosure of information from the sealed records. The Manhattan U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit confirmed that there was such an injunction.

Oberlander was sanctioned in 2015 by the federal district court judge overseeing the case. The judge also dismissed the majority of the allegations in Oberlander’s complaint. The decision was made by the court because he continually defied the order that instructed him to convey if there he had included any unlawfully obtained information in his complaint. Due to his actions, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York began investigating Oberlander for criminal behavior. The federal bar grievance committee also was determining if they should revoke Oberlander’s license to practice law.

In august of 2018, the grievance committee released a 40-page written order that determined Oberlander had engaged in criminal behavior that breached various ethical rules. The grievance committee established that his illegal activities included infringing court orders, disclosing sealed documentation and threatening to disclose sealed information if the defendants did not commit to a financial agreement. It was Oberlander’s criminal actions that lead to the grievance committee ordering that his legal license be suspended for the period of one year.

It seems that reputable law firms do not want to have any dealings with Oberlander. Richard Lerner, an attorney and friend of Oberlander, represented him in the case concerning the disclosure of the sealed documents. At the time the proceeding took place, Lerner was a partner at the highly-regarded Wilson Elsner law firm. It is quite apparent that the firm did not want to be linked to Oberlander. They asked to withdraw their representation and were granted that request by the court. Reportedly, Lerner was fired by the Elsner Wilson firm because he refused to stop handling Oberlander’s case. It speaks heavily about Oberlander’s apparent dishonest nature when a reputable firm refuses to represent him in court. It is clear that Oberlander has exerted unethical behavior in the past. When his one-year suspension is lifted, he is almost certain to engage in such illegal and unlawful practices again. In short, Frederick Oberlander is not one to be trusted when it comes to matters of the court.

Signed Executive Orders reveal Trump is planning mass arrests, military tribunals for deep state traitors like Comey, Clinton and Obama

Signed Executive Orders reveal Trump is planning mass arrests, military tribunals for deep state traitors like Comey, Clinton and Obama

by Mike Adams –

As the documents cited here clearly show, President Trump is planning to carry out mass arrests of deep state traitors, including Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, James Comey and even Barack Obama. This is fully covered, with accompanying documentation from the U.S. Federal Register, in the links and video below. (This author is fully supportive of this effort to save America and arrest the traitors.)

The confirmation of Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court is the key to getting this done in a timely manner, which explains why the deranged Left is going to such outrageous extremes to fabricate false allegations against Kavanaugh and stage coordinated, well-funded protests to try to block the U.S. Senate from confirming him.

Once Kavanaugh is on the court, it will add the necessary support for constitutional “emergency powers” that concentrate power in the executive branch of government (currently headed by President Trump) during times of war and national emergencies.

FACT: The United States has been operating under a state of declared war since September, 2001, following the 9/11 attacks.

FACT: The United States has been operating under a declared national emergency, signed by President Trump, since December 20, 2017 (see proof document, below).

In this detailed video analysis, I lay out the evidence for President Trump’s plan to issue mass arrests of deep state traitors, then try them for treason under military tribunals. This is justified and lawful because the acts being committed against the United States of America by deep state traitors are acts of treason during a time of declared war. It is no coincidence that President Trump has deliberately funded the U.S. Pentagon with its most massive budgets ever conceived. This is because the Pentagon has agreed to run the military arrests of deep state traitors, under the direction of the Commander-In-Chief, President Trump.

President Trump, I believe, has decided to go to bat for America and utterly destroy the anti-American deep state crime ring that has been working for years to destroy this nation and end its national sovereignty. This will be Trump’s legacy. He may not even run for re-election after 2020, since his entire plan to arrest the traitors and restore the rule of law in America will require him to step aside once certain goals are accomplished (see detailed explanation below).

Note that in order to accomplish this, President Trump will need to declare temporary martial law. He will need our support during this time to maintain order and civility across the nation as the arrests and trials of deep state traitors are under way. We should all expect mass violence and chaos from the Left, which is following the “Rules for Radicals,” a blueprint for communist revolts and violent overthrow attempts of governments.

See the documents for yourself… this is all posted on the U.S. Federal Register government website

Here are the links to the documents cited in this comprehensive video:

Document #1: Executive Order 13818, signed December 20, 2017. “Blocking the Property of Persons Involved in Serious Human Rights Abuse or Corruption”

This document specifically describes the crimes of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, James Comey and Robert Mueller under the “corruption” section, alluding to the Uranium One scandal and Obama’s multi-billion dollar money laundering operation that handed nuclear weapons capabilities to Iran. It says that the executive order targets, “any foreign person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General… to be a current or former government official, or a person acting for or on behalf of such an official, who is responsible for or complicit in, or has directly or indirectly engaged in… corruption, including the misappropriation of state assets, the expropriation of private assets for personal gain, corruption related to government contracts or the extraction of natural resources, or bribery…”

This describes precisely what Clinton, Comey, Mueller, Obama, Brennan, McCabe and others carried out under the Obama regime. These are more than just felony federal crimes; they are acts of treason against the United States of America, carried out during a time of declared war.

From that document, here is President Trump’s declared national emergency:

I therefore determine that serious human rights abuse and corruption around the world constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States, and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat.

Document #2: Executive Order 13618, signed July 6, 2012 by President Obama. “Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions”

This executive order grants the President absolute control over all U.S. media, including internet tech giants (social media), news networks and news websites. It specifically names:

…communications that support Continuity of Government; Federal, State, local, territorial, and tribal emergency preparedness and response communications; non-military executive branch communications systems; critical infrastructure protection networks; and non-military communications networks, particularly with respect to prioritization and restoration…

Document #3: Executive Order 13825, signed March 1, 2018. “2018 Amendments to the Manual for Courts-Martial, United States”

Although much more difficult to read, this document essentially establishes the preservation of the government’s right to prosecute crimes of treason and deep state collusion against America, all of which may be prosecuted via military tribunals under existing U.S. law.

This would allow deep state traitors to be arrested by military police and subjected to military trials run by the Pentagon, completely bypassing the corrupt court system which has been deliberately stacked with complicit deep state traitors and “resistance” judges.

To accomplish this, President Trump must announce temporary martial law

For the record, I wholly support this effort to arrest and prosecute the thousands of deep state traitors who have become a cancer upon America. Were you aware that James Comey was a communist? John Brennan, of course, has remained a communist for his entire adult life, and Barack Obama was a radical Muslim who despised America and worked every day to undermine it through a variety of nefarious means (including allowing U.S. military encryption technology to be captured by Iran via the U.S. drone “GPS spoofing” incident).

For starters, Barack Obama personally authorized the illegal “spygate” spying on Trump campaign officials. Barack Obama also allowed China to hack 21 million U.S. military personnel records, effectively dumping the entire U.S. Pentagon database into the hands of Communist China.

For a full, detailed explanation of Obama’s treasonous crimes against America, watch this extremely important video from REAL.video (it has been banned from YouTube for obvious reasons):

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Brennan, Andrew McCabe, Loretta Lynch, Peter Strzok and a long list of other traitors have been conspiring for years to destroy America from within and see it replaced with a communist regime run by authoritarian globalists. Tech giants like Apple, Google and Facebook are all part of the plan, which is exactly why you’ve seen every one of them working closely with China to roll out authoritarian techno-tyranny infrastructure systems that plan to enslave every citizen of the world, making them powerless and obedient to a globalist technocracy that runs the “one world government.”

Trump’s plan to rescue America from the globalists will require temporary martial law

In order to halt this global dictatorship and defend America against traitors who are working to destroy it, President Trump must carry out the following actions:

1) Achieve the release of the declassified, unredacted deep state documents from within the FBI and DOJ that will reveal the full extent of deep state treason against America. (The FBI and DOJ are currently stalling this effort, furthering their treason against America and proving they have a lot to hide.) Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff and Warner have already committed acts of treason in calling on the FBI and DOJ to defy this presidential order.

2) Invoke the national emergency powers which are constitutionally granted to the executive branch of government. (Technically, this already happened in 2017.)

3) Invoke President Obama’s executive order 13618 and seize control of Google, Facebook, CNN, Washington Post and the New York Times to halt the treasonous lies, coordinated election fraud and political coup attempt which is being run by all these traitors of America.

4) Use all controlled communications channels to publicly declare the details of the crimes (and criminal actors) which have been committed against America. Disclose everything to the America people about how their country had been overrun and destroyed from within.

5) Order military police to find and arrest thousands of deep state traitors who have been deliberately undermining America from within. This will include hundreds of people inside the FBI and DOJ, plus hundreds more in the State Department and other agencies. Arrests must also include traitorous, corrupt federal judges who have deliberately undermined America by, for example, blocking Trump’s constitutional travel ban to protect America from enemy terrorists. Many traitors will attempt to flee the country, of course, and they will need to be located and brought to justice like former Nazi war criminals.

6) Issue an executive order demanding national voter ID for all future elections. No longer will America tolerate democracy being stolen by the votes of illegals who are granted voting rights by California and other complicit, anti-America states or cities.

7) Suspend elections during the military tribunals, but lay out a timeline for the restoration of elections and nationwide voting (with voter ID in place) to restore the rule of law and give America back to the American people.

8) Deploy the U.S. military along the southern border. Use the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build the wall.

9) Promise to resign the presidency once the rule of law is restored in America, signaling to the American people that Trump plans to hand over power to the next elected President within a reasonable time period. Americans will rightly be concerned about martial law morphing into a military dictatorship. Trump needs to assure the American people that his job is to destroy the deep state, restore the rule of law, then get out of the way and retire as the greatest U.S. President in history — the President who saved America from traitors and communists.

The American people will not tolerate a permanent military dictatorship in America, but they will tolerate temporary martial law needed to drain the swamp, arrest the traitors and restore the rule of law.

During this time, by the way, the entire FBI likely needs to be disbanded and rebuilt from scratch. The agency’s credibility has been utterly destroyed by the actions of James Comey, Peter Strzok and others.

This is the very reason I voted for President Trump. I have avocated the uses of a Military Tribunal many times in my comments on Facebook. If President Trump were to declare Marshal Law I would definitely support him in his efforts to drain the swamp. I would answer the call if volunteers are needed. I have prayed for this many many times over. Our country as we know it is at stake and I recognize that fact. If there is anything I can do to support President Trump’s efforts please let me know.
    Sincerely

Professor: “God-Like” Google Has Been “Weaponized” For Political Purposes

Professor: “God-Like” Google Has Been “Weaponized” For Political Purposes

Dec 18, 2018 by

Cyber security expert warns employees are punishing sites that conflict with their politics

Professor of cyber security Kevin Curran says that Google now has “God-like” power which has been weaponized for political purposes.

Responding to a story about how Google considered banning Breitbart from its lucrative ad network for vague, unspecified “hate speech,” Curran, professor of cyber security at the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment at Ulster University, warned that the Silicon Valley giant is out of control.

“The newly released leaked emails, which demonstrate Google employees plotting to ban Breitbart from Google AdSense, show again the God-like power companies like Google have in modern life,” said Curran.

“Here we have a company with employees who’d seen to remove the ads from a company, which relies on the dominant search engine of the Internet,” Curran told Sputnik. “Removal from the search ad market on Google would severely damage their business. It seems that Google employees were seeking to weaponize Google search for left-wing political purposes.”

Calling for greater transparency, Curran said that Google employees were abusing their power to “to punish sites which conflict with their politics” and that a “company culture” existed at Google which turns a blind eye to this abuse.

As we previously reported, following Donald Trump’s election win, Google employees discussed gaming their own search results to bury conservative media outlets.

“How many times did you see the Election now card with items from opinion blogs (Breitbart, Daily Caller) elevated next to legitimate news organizations?” asked Google engineer Scott Byer, adding, “That’s something that can and should be fixed.”

A video of a Google meeting shortly after the election which leaked in September also revealed “an atmosphere of panic and dismay amongst the tech giant’s leadership” and a willingness to not let Trump win again.

According to Dr. Robert Epstein, Google helped shift 2 to 3 million votes in Hillary Clinton’s favor with bias search algorithms during the presidential election.

“Who on Earth gave these private companies the power to make decisions about what everyone in the world is going to see or not see?” asked Epstein. “These companies shouldn’t have that power, period.”

Teachers don’t understand the depth of dyslexia

Teachers don’t understand the depth of dyslexia

Dec 13, 2018 by

Cathryn Knight –

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that most of us know for causing problems with writing, reading and spelling. But it is more than this, and can affect people in many different ways.

It is generally accepted that underlying neurological aspects, such as slight differences in brain structure, can change the way that dyslexic people process information, and this affects the behaviour they might display. In addition to literacy difficulties, people with dyslexia may also have trouble expressing themselves, even though they are very knowledgeable about a topic. People with dyslexia also have many strengths, such as being able to visualise things differently, thinking outside of the box and being creative.

School is often the place where dyslexia is first discovered, however, my recent survey found that the majority of teachers in England and Wales describe dyslexia as a problem with literacy – and don’t understand the biological and cognitive aspects.

For the study, I asked 2,600 primary and secondary school classroom teachers in England and Wales to provide a description of dyslexia. The majority of teachers (79.5%) described dyslexia at the behavioural level. They mentioned the outward symptoms of dyslexia, mainly issues with reading, writing, and spelling.

Only 39.3% of the teachers in the survey described the cognitive aspects associated with dyslexia. They talked of things like phonological processing differences – the cognitive ability to identify sounds in words, for example, breaking down “cat” to “c”, “a” and “t” – as well as issues with decoding, and memory problems. Finally, 9% described the condition’s biological aspects. These teachers described dyslexia in relation to the brain, as well as neurological differences, or genetics being the cause of the dyslexic symptoms.

Together these results reveal that most teachers have a stereotypical understanding of dyslexia, focusing more on the behaviour they see. But while teachers certainly need to update their own understanding of the condition, and play a better part in changing the way dyslexic children are taught, it is not down to them alone. My research also found that there is a problem with the way in which teachers themselves are taught about dyslexia.

During the survey, the teachers were asked, in their opinion, how well dyslexia was covered on their teacher training programme. A large majority (71.8%) said it was “not covered well at all”. This lack of training could help to explain why teachers tend to only understand dyslexia based on how it impacts students at the behavioural level.

Research suggests between 4% and 20% of the population have dyslexia. As the average primary school class consists of 27 students, and the average secondary school class is 20 students, it can be estimated that teachers will have between one and five dyslexic students in each class. This is a significant proportion and in order for teachers to be able to properly help each dyslexic pupil, it is vital that they understand the condition at more than just a behavioural level.

Effective interventions have been found to help those showing dyslexic symptoms. A large body of research links dyslexia with a phonological processing difficulty. A 2009 report commissioned by the UK government concluded that prioritising phonological skills is an effective way to teach children with dyslexia how to read. So it is now recommended that teachers use phonic-based reading approaches with all students, to best help those who might struggle with literacy. And as the children grow older, teachers must provide work in different learning styles to help pupils that process information in different ways.

To ensure school children with dyslexia are getting the help they need, teacher training needs an overhaul. Educators need to know about all the different aspects of the condition, and have access to good quality, evidence‐based training too. Only with up-to-date knowledge of how to best help their students with dyslexia can they help them reach their full potential.

Report: College Applicants Rejected for Following Alex Jones on Twitter

Aug 9, 2018 by

‘This data collection and usage is an entirely new level of social engineering that is trying to change society’

Report: College Applicants Rejected for Following Alex Jones on Twitter

College applicants are being rejected for merely following the Alex Jones account on Twitter, a digital privacy expert has warned.

Bradley Shear, who runs the Shear on Social Media Law blog, claims one of his clients was rejected from a prestigious college after an admissions interviewer scoured the student’s social media account and found she followed Alex Jones on Twitter.

While one of my legal clients (a 17 year old teen) was being interviewed by one of the most competitive colleges in the country he was asked why he was following Alex Jones on Twitter. My client, a teenager expected to talk about his stellar grades, top test scores, amazing extracurricular activities and volunteer work, but the interviewer focused on who he was connecting with online. My client had never “liked” or re-tweeted any of Mr. Jones’ content. His alleged “transgression” was that he followed Mr. Jones on Twitter. That was it.

Shear researched the student’s social media account and found he was a supporter of Democrat socialist Bernie Sanders, whom Alex Jones certainly does not support.

Shear says he managed to satisfactorily resolve the student’s issue after speaking with the admissions director, who “didn’t want any negative publicity about this matter.”

The admissions office investigation into his client’s social media connections is a troubling sign universities are attempting to reshape society by discriminating against students based on political ideologies, Shear explains.

“This data collection and usage is an entirely new level of social engineering that is trying to change society,” warns Shear, pointing to a Washington Post study which found students already enter college with a more hostile view on free speech than 50 years ago.

“While I am not a listener or supporter of Mr. Jones’… his audience has every right to watch his videos and listen to him and connect with him online since we live in a free country,” notes the online privacy advocate, adding he rejects Jones’ 9/11 inside job theories.

“Unfortunately, some college admissions officials believe that applicants who connect with him online regardless of whether they believe Mr. Jones’ theories should not be provided an opportunity to attend the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions.”

The problem, which includes admissions offices scouring through students’ Google search history, is endemic among Ivy league and other prestigious universities, where conservative viewpoints are extremely marginalized.

Shear advises students carefully review their social media and search history before applying to colleges.

“This example demonstrates why teens need to not just audit their digital profiles and lock down their social media accounts during the college application process, they must also ensure that their web surfing history is not collected by an admissions committee because innocent digital activity is being used to reject students from their dream colleges,” says Shear, who offers students a service which audits social media activities.

An Interview with Alan Singer: A Statue For Shirley Chisholm

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

1)Professor Singer, please tell us a bit about your education and experience and what you do at Hofstra.

I am a teacher educator at Hofstra University and a former New York City high school social studies teacher. I am also a historian and a political activist. New York City, along with much of the country, has been involved in a prolonged debate over who should be recognized by statues, monuments, and street names. We actually have streets on a Brooklyn army base named for Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. After considerable public protest the Mayor set up a commission to review who the city honors. A statue of Dr. James Marion Sims, a pioneering 19th century gynecologist, was removed from Central Park because Sims had experimented on enslaved African women with their ability to give consent and without either anesthesia or antiseptics. Other controversial statues, one of Teddy Roosevelt at the Museum of Natural History that celebrates imperialism, one of Christopher Columbus who has been accused of genocidal practices against indigenous people, and Peter Stuyvesant, who promoted both slavery and anti-Semitism in the Dutch New Amsterdam colony that became New York, were allowed to remain. A positive outcome of the review process was a commitment to build new monuments to people, especially women, who have not been recognized in the past.

2) Now tell us a bit about the life and times of Shirley Chisholm.

Shirley Chisholm is a great choice for a new, New York City statue. Chisholm was the first African American woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives where she represented Central Brooklyn. In 1972, she was the first woman to seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination and the first black woman to seek the presidential nomination of either of the major political parties. Chisholm was also a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus. In 2015, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Before she entered politics and was elected to the New York State Assembly, Chisholm was a nursery school teacher and consultant to New York City’s Division of Day Care. While in the State Assembly, Chisholm helped secure unemployment insurance for domestic workers.

3) Whose idea was it to have a statue to recognize her life and contributions?

Chirlane McCray, the wife of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has championed new statues honoring the achievements of New York City women. The Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments, and Markers set up an online nomination process that was open in June and July. The criteria for nominations were that they recognize an event, person, or group that had a significant connection to New York City; happened at least 20 years ago; and that the people involved must be no longer living.

Over a thousand nominations were made and Shirley Chisholm was the Commission’s choice, although no vote totals were announced. I liked the online process but was disappointed that it was only open during the summer. If the process had extended into the fall it could have involved New York City school children in researching and writing about potential candidates.

4) Now, why Prospect Park — is this symbolic?

Prospect Park is the Central Park of the former independent city of Brooklyn, which is now one of New York City’s five boroughs. Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn in 1924. Her parents were a factory laborer from Guyana and a seamstress from Barbados. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1946 and later a Master’s degree in early childhood education from Teachers College at Columbia University. Prospect Park currently has ten statues honoring male historical figures and none of a woman. It is definitely about time.

5) In your mind, should we have statues honoring other politicians or leading figures?

New York City currently has over 1,000 monuments and 145 statues that honor individual men. Only five honor women, Joan of Arc, Golda Meir, Gertrude Stein,Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harriet Tubman. Shirley Chisholm will be number six. In Manhattan’s Central park there are 23 historical male statues, but the only females represented in the park are fictional characters, nymphs, and angels. A non-profit group is lobbying the city to place a monument to suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony at the West 77th Street entrance. I would also like to see statues honoring Margaret Sanger for her work promoting women’s health and birth control; Clara Lemlich and other local women who helped build the American labor movement; Bella Abzug, a Congressional Representative and a leading feminist and peace activist in the1960s and 1970s; and Elizabeth Jennings a pre-Civil War civil rights activists who fought to desegregate the city’s transit system and founded the city’s first kindergarten for African American children.

6) What have I neglected to ask?

I am currently involved in two projects related to the statue issue. At Hofstra University, during the Spring2018 semester, students raised serious questions about a statute outside the student center that honors Thomas Jefferson as author of the Declaration of Independence. Protests centered on whether Jefferson’s role as a slaveholder,as a participant in the domestic slave trade, and his sexual relationship with a teenaged Sally Hemings, who he owned as a slave, outweigh any positive contributions he made to the nation, and support removal of the statue. After meetings with university officials, Hofstra established a Presidential Task Force on Representation in Public Spaces to report on both existing statues and possible new statues and plaques. Hofstra is also planning an academic conference for Fall 2019 examining the impact of the trans-Atlantic slave trade on creation of the modern world and on race relations in the United States. For now the Thomas Jefferson stature will remain, but whatever the final resolution, the statue debate has definitely precipitated a much broader awareness of history on our campus.

In New York City, I have been involved in campaigns to get historical markers that recognized the city’s involvement in slavery and the slave trade. The city finally installed a marker at the site of the colonial slave market on Wall Street near the East River, another initiative supported by Chirlane McCray. Now I am pushing to rename Metro Tech Commons in Brooklyn as Grand Emancipation Jubilee Plaza. It was the site where Brooklyn’s African American community and abolitionists awaited the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation on New Year’s Eve 1863.
